How do I work with bulk items?

Definition and Usage:

A bulk item in TSS can be any item that is purchased in one quantity but sold by another. Examples are wire or window tint that is purchased by the roll but sold by the foot, or lubricants or chemicals purchased by the drum but sold by the gallon, quart, etc. Defining an item in your inventory as a bulk item will allow you to easily order the product by it's bulk quantity, such as a single roll of wire, then sell this product on invoices by it's unit quantity, such as a single foot.

 

Creating a Bulk Item:

To create a bulk item in your inventory proceed as follows:

First create a new item as you usually would. Enter Make, Model, description, etc. Then on the Extended Tab click on the Bulk Item checkbox. This action will change the appearance of the form slightly and add controls specific to bulk item processing.

Next select the Quantities Tab and enter the number of units in the Qty in bulk item box... in this case there are 1000 feet of wire in the roll.

Now select the Prices Tab and enter your Bulk item cost.

Then save the record or click Functions -> Recalculate Prices and Tss will  calculate your unit cost based on the bulk item cost. Whenever the bulk item cost is changed the unit cost will be updated by the program.

 

Ordering and Selling a Bulk Item:

Your bulk item is now all set up. Lets go ahead and order the product. Notice that the cost on the purchase order reflects the bulk item cost.

Now that the item has been ordered and received we can return to the inventory form and click on the Quantities Tab. We now see that we have one full roll of wire containing 1000 feet.

OK, now we'll sell some of these. Notice the price on the invoice reflects the unit price. The unit cost is also included in this invoice record.

Now we'll return to the inventory form and again select the Quantities Tab. We now see that there are no full rolls, just one partial roll with 973 feet left on it.  If we now ordered and received another of these items this form would then show one full roll, one partial roll with 973 Feet left, and a total unit count of 1,973.
